🇮🇳 India’s Bid: 2036 Olympic Games
-
India has officially declared it wants to host the 2036 Summer Olympics. Ahmedabad is the city named for the bid.
-
PM Modi, the IOA, and Gujarat govt are pushing hard — there have been visits to the IOC HQ and ministerial meetings to show India can handle it.
-
But here’s the kicker: 2036 is 11 years away. By that time, Modi will be 86 years old. Either he’ll still be flexing as PM or… just another old guy sipping chai and watching the opening ceremony on TV like the rest of us.
-
Meanwhile, the IOC has paused the host selection process to “review how future hosts are selected.” So India’s bid is basically on a waiting list.
🤔 Why It’s A Big Deal (And Why It’s Not)
Why It Matters:
-
Hosting Olympics = massive infrastructure boost. Stadiums, roads, tourism, media.
-
Global prestige; people get to see India more than just memes & politics.
-
Could push sports culture, improve facilities for athletes who currently have fewer chances.
Why It’s Risky / Suspect:
-
Cost: Olympics are expensive. India would need to spend big money upfront.
-
Delivery risk: Projects might get delayed, over budget, or become unused after (white elephant situation).
-
The IOC’s review pause means rules might change; India may have to meet new stricter requirements.
